Bro. David Gillies

Photograph of Bro. David Gillies who was initiated into Lodge Randolph in May 1919. Bro. Gillies was a coal miner residing in Kirkcaldy at the time of his initiation. It is thought that he emigrated to Canada.

The photograph was provided by his relatives in Canada. They sent a message into the Lodge "We were going thro some old photos and came across one that shows a gentleman wearing a sash with Randolph No.776 on it.My wife thinks that it may be her Grandfather David Gillies, He lived in Kircaldy. Would it be possible to verify this if I scan the picture and send you a copy?"

After checking through the books of the Lodge the following information was found:

David Gillies of 84 Sutherland Street Kirkcaldy. A miner who joined the Lodge at the age of 31.

Joined and received his first Degree on 29th May 1919 

Received his second Degree on 3rd July 1919

Received his third Degree on 17th July 1919

Received his Mark Degree on 13th Sept 1919

His proposer was John Mathews a Past Master of the Lodge and George Dryburgh. The joining fee at that time was £3.10 payable before Initiation. There was 11 initiates that evening, the meeting was held in the Free Gardeners Hall in Buckhaven and the Master of the Lodge was Brother John Barker.

20 Brethren were passed on the evening of his second Degree, 17 Brethren raised on the evening of his third Degree and 63 Brethren received the Mark Degree on the 13th Sept 1919. The Mark Degree was worked by the Immediate Past Master Bro. William Gillies who was Master from 1916 to 1918.
